Voluntourists travel to Khao Lak in the southern Thai province of Phang Nga to experience life in a Thai village. Khao Lak was one of the worst hit areas of the 2004 tsunami. Rebuilding is still taking place, with many construction sites and education programs headed by volunteers.
Voluntourists in Homestay have to opportunity to help families who have lost their livelihood from this terrible disaster. People from all walks of life continue to suffer from the effects of the tsunami.
There are many different ethnicities in Thailand, with several types of villages in the province of Phang Nga. Voluntourists have the choice of staying in three types of villages. This includes a fishing village, a Moken sea gypsy village, or a Thai model village.
All fishing villages along the coast of Phang Nga were devastated by the tsunami, but fortunately donations and support from the last two years have allowed many boats and houses to be built and replaced.
Moken sea gypsies are one group of people that populate Phang Nga. These people are traditionally a nomadic, sea-dwelling community, but have moved to villages in recent years. Travelers will learn about the local culture of these unique environments.
As a third option, travelers may elect to stay in a Thai modern village. These unique, traditional houses were recently built to incorporate a deeper understanding of present Thai culture into a private and personal setting. Staying in the modern village will allow voluntourists to experience life in a present traditional Thai setting while maintaining a high degree of comfort.
Homestay offers individuals a once in a lifetime opportunity to gain a unique understanding of real Thai culture beyond the tourist industry. Homestay allows you to be more than another sunbaked tourist on the beach. Through this experience you will return home with more than souvenirs and a nice tan.
